Every year, the National Mah Jongg League issues an updated Mah Jongg Card that sets the official hands and rules of play for the current year. Therefore, an official 2026 Mah Jongg Card isn’t just a “nice-to-have” — it’s essential if you want to play correctly and competitively. Here’s why:

The card is completely refreshed annually (and typically not released until late March/early April), with new winning hands to keep the game exciting and challenging. Using an old card means you’ll be working with outdated hands. You are welcome to bring the old card with you, but just know that most people will be using the current year’s card.

A current card ensures that all players in a game are following the same official rules. This avoids confusion, disputes, and misplays at the table.

Mahjong clubs, tournaments, and groups almost always require the latest card so that everyone is playing under the same conditions.

You can order your official 2026 Mah Jongg Card directly from the National Mah Jongg League, which helps preserve and promote the game for future generations. Cards usually go on sale for pre-order in the Fall for the upcoming year, and they’re mailed out starting in the Spring. Cards come in both Standard (wallet-sized) and Large Print versions. Same content, just different formats.
